Get all you can from a conference. You paid for it—in money and time

It’s okay to show up at a conference like a blank slate and drink it all in, but that’s not how I approach it. If I paid to attend, I want to make the most of every moment.

Here’s a few tips to maximize your conference investment

Review the schedule ahead of time and select the most beneficial sessions

  • Consider all sessions/workshops, but prioritize the ones in your area of expertise or topics that can advance your ambitions.

  • Titles can be deceiving! Don’t get stuck in a beginner class when you should be attending the advanced sessions.

  • Check out the presenter’s credentials before attending. You’re better off picking a class or workshop with someone who can further your knowledge through their expertise.

Schedule an occasional break

  • Avoid conference fatigue by scheduling periodic walks or taking a coffee break.

  • Breaks are the perfect opportunity to get up-to-date with colleagues or hear about what they’ve learned.

Volunteer to help at the info desk

Besides giving back to the organization hosting the conference, your time at the information desk provides opportunities to network with conference staff. They’re in the know and could help you connect with people who can advance your knowledge or meet your goals.

Visit every vendor booth

While you don’t need to spend considerable time with each vendor, stroll the vendor area and talk with as many vendors as your time allows. They might give you valuable information about a product or service you’ve never heard of before. OR they might trigger ideas about how to solve an issue that’s been holding you back.

Create a "To-do" list during the sessions

Don't wait until the end (or worse yet, the following week) to think about what you learned and how to apply new ideas to your work. Jot down ideas during the classes and workshops.

In short—prepare for the conference to gain the most from the scheduled sessions. And take advantage of unscheduled opportunities during a break, at the info desk, and the vendor booths.
